A new chapter in my life, the closing of Salon Epiphany

Six years ago I began a journey, to open my very own hair salon.  I had a vision of exactly how I wanted it to be, look, and be managed.  Over the past 6 years, we have had such a great time, paired with hardships of stylists coming and going, never really having the right “team” to fulfill my vision.  I have worked day and night, holidays and date nights, trying to make this dream come true.  But now is the time that I have to step back, and realize this vision of what I wanted doesn’t compare to the life that I want to make for my family.  My 3 boys need their mom home more and more time with just them when I am home.  They need me to be a volunteer at their school, and go on field trips, more than I need to own a salon.  Am I sad about leaving this vision behind, yes and no.  Yes because it looks exactly what I always hoped for, yes because it took so much to make it all happen, to get over all of the hurdles in my way.  Yes because in making the commitment to my family, there are things that I will be giving up.  But in the same respect no, I won’t miss the 12+ hour days that I have done every week for 6 years.  No I won’t miss everything being my fault.  I won’t miss missing out on baseball and soccer games, and good night kisses and giggles.  My heart is both sad, and relieved.  It’s a ton of work to keep a small business going, and I don’t regret a single minute of it.  It’s just my time to close this chapter in my life story, turn the page and see what is in store for me next.

What will be my next step?  I’m not 100% sure yet J  I’m still working out the details.  I am still obsessively in love with hair, and I always will be.  I love teaching and training with Pravana, none of that will be changing.  But where I will be sharing my love of coloring and styling hair is yet to be determined.  I will keep you updated via e-mail, Facebook, and this blog, I promise.

Who knew that's what ions did?

Yesterday we had an awesome class learning all about the One styling tools that we sell at Salon Epiphany. We learned about positive and negative ions, tourmaline , ceramic plates on flat irons, different kind of motors, and how all these things make a difference in what kind of tools you use to dry and style your hair.

Here's some awesome points of difference when choosing One Styling tools

  • They admit 26x more negative ions (which dry hair faster & create amazing shine)
  • The ceramic plates on all of the flat irons are coated and baked 3 times (other companies only do this once) then coated in pearl dust or diamond dust to give a smooth glide (and they last much longer!)
  • The curling stiks, bubble wand, ribbon wand, and spiral wand reach 410 degrees while no other companies go over 325, paired with the gold dust in the coating gives you beautiful long lasting curls!
To learn more about these amazing tools, check out their website at www.onestyling.com or stop into Salon Epiphany for a recommendation and demo!

Stay tuned for Fabulous Deals in February!!

Helping create joy this Christmas

This holiday season our hearts have been led to help the boys at the Methodist Children's Home Society. These boys will wake up Christmas morning without families, as they are awaiting adoptive families or are in foster care. Help us to create some joy and let them know they are not forgotten. You can view our online donation site

http://www.youcaring.com/other/creating-joy-for-children-s-home-society/112451

Or visit www.mchsmi.org to view wish lists and you can drop off gifts (or wrapping paper products) to the salon (22289 Goddard, Taylor mi) by Dec. 12th.

We thank you for your support!

We are moving and here's the story why . . .

Sometimes you have a dream, and you chase it, and achieve it. Then your world changes and your dreams evolve with it. I always thought I wanted to run a big Salon and Spa, and it was fun having a large staff. We laughed, a lot. I look back on that time of Salon Epiphany and smile. Along with my smile though, I remember how hard it was to organize, run, and motivate a large busy salon, work for Pravana, and be a full time mom & wife. I was unable to give detail to the area’s I have the most passion, education (our staff’s and my own), clients, photo shoots, and teaching. So we decided it’s time to focus on what we find most important when it comes to Salon Epiphany. We’re going back to the basics, becoming more detail oriented to better serve our clients! Focusing on keeping up with the latest in techniques, cuts, and colors. Providing the highest level of customer service possible.

So what can you expect at our new location? The same fun, comfortable, and professional atmosphere. A color bar out in the open so you can see what we do when we disappear to mix your color. More specialty hair color options as we continue our education. Opportunities to help us with photo shoots! And lots of fun details to make your experience the best it can be.

Where is this new location? Not far! We will be located at 22289 Goddard Road in Taylor. It’s in the new strip mall just off Pardee, acrossed the street from the CVS. Our phone number will stay the same, and we will keep you updated on the date that we will be moving.

Redken Symposium 2013

Try our slideshow maker at Animoto.

Not only was Redken Symposium a lot of fun, but I learned a ton of new color techniques, hair cuts, styling, good business practices, and how to make each clients visit the best it can be!  I may not be a Redken user, but they sure can inspire a Stylist!  The theme of the event was Obsession, and they challenged each of us to become obsessed with education, this was not a hard concept for me, I am in love with learning anything I possibly can when it comes to hair!  I stay up too late almost every night watching videos, reading articles & blogs, searching and pining to my Pinterest page , attending any class or show that I can, and anything else that I possibly can to learn.  I love learning as much as I love sharing what I learn.  When I am invited into a Salon or store to teach Pravana classes, I am always honored.  It's an amazing feeling to see something click in a stylists head.  And that feeling that I get, makes it all worth it.  That is my obsession.

One of my favorite things . . . Learning! (Bet my mom never thought she'd read that!)

As I get ready to head to Vegas for Redken Symposium, I can't help but to already feel so inspired! I follow many of the educators whose classes I will be attending on Facebook and twitter, from the bits they have been sharing I can tell that I will be challenged and learn so much.

Getting ready involves putting together head sheets ( yes pretty much what your thinking, outlines of heads with different views so you can draw color & cut techniques), camera charged with lots of memory, comfy shoes, and most important an open mind ready to learn. I'm hoping to come home with great ideas not only for Salon Epiphany, but color techniques and haircuts to step my skills and bring your looks to the next level!

Keep posted for all the new looks and ideas that I'm about to learn!

The difference between “professional” or “salon only” and grocery store hair care products

I came acrossed this article posted by Anastasia Hair Studio and had to share it.

When a product has been professionally diagnosed for your hairs special needs, by a hair care expert, it is going to be more suited to you than something that you have picked up off the shelf at your local store.

Good quality means nothing, as without expert advice you may not find the right one for you. In fact, you could use one that is not suitable at all. For example, general use or “family shampoo”, won’t treat your partners dandruff, your babies cradle cap and your frizzy ends at the same time! With statistics showing that 80% of us miss diagnose our own hair type and so purchase the wrong products, when left to our own devices, you can see where the difference lies.

A reasonably new marketing strategy of selling you a product that has a specific purpose rather than treats a specific hair type does make life a lot easier. E.g. you want volume then you buy ‘volume’ shampoo rather than ‘fine hair’ shampoo.

As with most things, price is a good indicator of quality when trying to choose a hair care product and applies equally to the products you buy at your salon or the grocery store. Once you reach the upper middle to high price range the ingredients will be of a better quality and contain more of them (e.g. real essential oils rather than the cheap non-pure versions) and on the reverse of the coin, if you buy really cheap brands you will get what you pay for.

Professional brands on the whole use gentler surfactants (a type of soap used in shampoo) in more concentrated amounts, so you need far less product than with a grocery store brand to achieve the same result. The recommended serving of professional shampoo or conditioner is 5 ml per serve (the average cap full) whilst you may have to use three or four times more to get the same result from a cheap grocery store brand. However, the quality of the upper end of the grocery brands iseasily comparable to the lower to mid range of the professional brands so it really is your decision at the end of the day.

Your shampoo and conditioner are the foundation of a good hair style and should not be under valued when creating your look.

A shampoo should always be followed by a conditioner as a shampoo is negatively charged and a conditioner is positively charged, therefore one will balance or neutralize the other helping to restore the natural barrier (acid mantel) and protect the hair.
